Free soaker pattern

Links have been updated! (9/25/21)

Here is a free soaker pattern for use with wool interlock, wool sweaters, and fleece.

**If you would like to sell soakers you make from the pattern, I don't mind you selling them. All I ask is that you offer up one to a momma in need FFS (free for shipping) or donate it to Miracle Diapers, Lend a Hand Diapers, or a similar organization. If you don't intend to sell them for your WAHM business, I don't mind you selling the soakers you made for your little one that didn't fit so that you can recoup your money for materials and time.**

Have fun sewing! And feel free to make a small donation if you like the patterns.

Soaker Patterns (good for fleece or wool)
XL-XXXL Patterns
Extra layer for the wetzone
Extra layer for the wetzone for xxl-xxxl
Instructions

I am a novice at pattern making, so please excuse any errors in pattern markings. This is designed for a 1/4 inch seam allowance, but if you would be more comfortable sewing with a 1/2 inch seam allowance, just add an extra 1/4 inch to the pattern. It goes from newborn to Xlarge. Here are some of the ones that I have made for my daughter. The first three are made from recycled wool sweaters, and the others are made from wool interlock that I dyed.

If you are using a rather stretchy wool, I suggest using the waistband that's at least one size smaller.

I'm sorry about the broken link. I have changed it. You should get a word document with the xxl wetzone layer pattern now.

Katrina said...

Emily, you should be able to get 4 medium soakers from that if you lay it out well. You might have to piece together a waistband or leg cuffs for the fourth, though.

Brilliant, Katrina, thanks! Wish me luck. :)

The link should work now. I'm sorry about that.

I had a question regarding sizing. I'm wanting to make a pair for my nephew in potty training to wear at night time as opposed to disposable pull-ups, but not sure which size to use. I don't see him often enough to try and get an accurate measurement, but his mom said he wears a size 4/5T in pull-ups and underwear. Any suggestions? Thanks

Found this pattern this morning, and now officially have my first successful handmade item! I even sewed it by hand, because I don't have a machine. My daughter is currently wearing these soakers to bed. Thank you so much for sharing and helping ladies like me!

Thanks so much for the pattern and instructions! I have been doing it the way someone else suggested with the leg bands by folding them lengthwise first and sewing them to each leg-hole before sewing the sides together. Then I don't deal with the tiny leg holes. Also, I've been sewing for a while and when you draw a double headed arrow on a pattern it usually means which direction the "straight grain" of the fabric goes, which is the LEAST stretchy grain. So I used up the little bit of fabric I had doing it with the stretch wrong, 'cause I skimmed the instructions (der!). So perhaps you could write "stretch" on the arrow or change the arrow to represent the straight grain as per usual in patterning. Thanks again!

Is there a sizing chart?

I just made a trainer for my daughter using this pattern. Since I wasn't thinking about the fact that the original pattern was for a soaker/cover I made the Large, which is correct according to the measurements. Since I want them just as training pants I think I should have made one size smaller. All in all the pattern worked great for what I wanted and I am thrilled to be able to make training pants.

I can't seem to understand what size the skirtie pattern should be printed onto. wouldn't a 8.5"x11" piece of paper be too small? Should it be on legal size paper?

Thanks for continuing to bless so many families with this wonderful pattern and easy instructions! Wonderful!

Hi there! Thank you for taking the time to create and share this pattern and tutorial. I haven't made any yet but I want to really bad! I was looking at the dimensions on the right and it doesn't seem to be the same size as what I actually printed. Am I supposed to enlarge it somehow?

Hi! I bought a bag full of what I hope are usable fabrics at my local thrift store. Mostly flannel PJ's for fitted diapers, but I also have some polyester fleece baby blankets, PJs and sweaters. Are these good to use in your soaker pattern? Brand new to sewing these and I didn't cloth diaper my daughter, although I hope to CD with any future babies. Thanks for the help.

I am so excited to have found your pattern! My toddler only needs a nighttime cover. Should I make a larger size to accommodate for a night time diaper, which is basically a double diaper?

Thanks a bunch!

Made my first just now (NB size) for my to-be-born baby and this is the cutest thing in the world!!! Can't thank you enough!!

Thank you so much for the pattern--and for choosing to share it the way you have, with a simple request for diapers for a mama who needs them if they are intended to be sold. That kind of compassion is so rare these days, and yet I find that it tends to be much more common in the cloth diapering community. I'm only intending to make a few for me (or my little one, at any rate!), but if they turn out well (which is debatable, not because of the pattern, but because of my sewing skills!) I might share some anyway. Thanks again!

What type(s) of fleece would you recommend for this soaker? I've come across 100% polyester fleece, 100% acrylic fleece, and polar fleece - I'm confused!

Hi Katrina,
The links for the soaker and longie patterns aren't working.
There were a couple of other ladies who were trying to download the patterns today. Thanks for everything.

I think the link is fixed now. Sorry about that!

Hi Katrina,
Thanks so much for such a fantastic pattern, I think it is great for wool and I have been playing around with it a bit to make it work better for us in fleece. I have linked up to your site from our blog http://hatchlingsclothnappies.wordpress.com/2013/05/24/diy-longies-and-covers-how-draft-your-soaker-pattern/ Hope that's ok

I'm on a mission to find a free pattern to do some overnight 'pull ups' for my 8yo bedwetter. How big is the xxl? Also, do you think this could be made into an AIO type thing? I sew, but I've never made diapers. Any suggestions?

AliAllieace said...

I think I read above that you only use the fleece pattern regardless of whether you are using wool or fleece? I believe you said you make a smaller waistband and leg cuffs though to keep it in...is that correct ? So you use a couples sizes down in waist and leg cuffs? Thanks!

Unknown said...

It sounds like these would be itchy for a baby to wear.....

Born2BArtsy said...

I just made two small double layered soakers out of a cream cashmere sweater. They seem to have turned out great!!! The double layer might have been overkill but they seemed thin...I don't have a baby yet but I've been making things. The newborn size seemed like it would be small for what I'm putting it over so I went with the small size. Do you think it will fit a newborn or do you think I need to make some newborn ones too? Mine ended up having a 14" rise probably because of the thick fabric but I think that will be fine. I'm going to be putting it over GMD prefolds and fitteds :)

@Mary Rowlands, only if you use a rough wool instead of something softer like Merino wool. I am about to convert a Merino sweater into longies for my daughter.

i was wondering if anyone else is having a problem printing the XL - XXL pattern...and even the smaller size pattern...its like not all the dotted lines print...it is very obvious. it is not that i am out of ink because the same color with come out on other parts of the document. and this has happened several times...the same lines are missing

Lulu said...

Hi Katrina, I just stumbled across your pattern and I'd like to give it a shot. I'm trying to make a small fleece soaker, the first time I printed it, the rise was only 12" when you state 15", so I checked my printer settings and changed to "actual size" but that only gave me an inch, I'm now getting 13". Am I missing something? Should I just give it a go and cut out the pattern as is? I checked all other sizes too, and I am off by 2 inches. Thanks so much for any insights!

Unknown said...

Thanks so much for the pattern, it was super easy and fast to make.
I made one out of no-pill fleece. I've used it on my baby a couple times over a prefold but I'm finding that her pants are getting damp, even though the soaker seems pretty dry. It seems to be wicking the moisture out to the next layer of clothes. Would this be solved if I add an extra layer of fleece to the soaker or do I have the wrong kind of fleece?

I make Diapers for our missionaries - third world countries do not have access to, or funds for disposables. Nor do they have reusable diapers - except for rags.

The same goes for sanitary napkins - so I make reusable napkins w/Zorb and PUL printed fabrics!

Little girls usually drop out of school when they start having their periods, due to others teasing them about the stains on clothing and the attitude of disgust of their society. So, in an effort to keep them IN school, and give them an education and self esteem, I make the reusable napkins.
Perhaps we can empower them to be strong women and help change their countries! I am SURE they love the napkins w/pretty little prints, especially in their dreary and drab world! And the same goes for the diapers for the little ones!!
I am forming groups of women and girls here in central Texas to make napkins and diapers. Try it, it makes you feel all nice and warm in your heart!!! :) :)

I printed out the "Soaker" pattern - however - the whole thing was so tiny it all fir on ONE sheet, - practically "Barbie Doll" size!!! I need the FULL size print out - what should I do? Thanks for sharing this with everyone! Blessings to you!

How do i know what size to make? I know this sounds like a stupid question... but with clothes on, my son's waist is 19" and thighs are 12" according to the pattern that would be an xlg. He's always been a little on the smaller/thinner side and he's only 14 mos and 20lbs... does this indeed seem like he needs the xlg? or lg?

I would love this pattern but the link doesn't seem to be working anymore. Do you know why that is? I think I accessed it like a week ago but didn't print it out then!

I couldn't get it to work either

It seems it's frozen.

Here's my soaker tutorial that I did if it helps any..though it probably won't without the pattern. If you have a diaper or even small toddler underwear that size you might be able to trace it out and adjust it for your size needs.

With the measurements for sizes I'm not sure what to do for my baby - his waist exceeds the limits of the size that fits his waist and rise, so do I stick with the size that matches his waist and rise measurement or figure out something different?

Still a great pattern! I used these to make medium and large wool soakers several years ago. I get wool sweaters from the thrift store, as well, though GW had gotten expensive. I found some great XL men's merino/cashmere sweaters at DI (Deseret Industries) recently. I felted them because they were in good shape. 😉
Now I'm making some newborn and small soakers for a baby on the way! Thanks so much!

P.S.- I just have to say, I could draft my own pattern when I had babies to measure, but it's so nice to have this pattern now so I can prepare for a baby that's not here yet!

Hi Katrina!

Thanks so much for sharing! There are so many comments on this thread so I wasn't able to check if someone already asked this question - my apologies in advance! I was just wondering about how many yards of fabric you think I'd need to make - let's say 8 soakers of various sizes. I have some organic wool interlock jersey chosen and I haven't yet purchased, but seeing that COVID is still rampant and fabric stores are either slow to ship or not really shipping at all I wanted to get the right amount to start out with! Would love your insight. We're expecting our first baby in early August and I'm very excited to start cloth diapering!

Thank you so much for this pattern. It's crazy to think that this pattern is more than a decade old!

I'm thinking of making the waistband twice as high to be able to fold it over for even better fit. I would love to hear what you think of the idea.

Thanks again!!!
